Who we are

CARELA Foundation is a nonprofit organization committed to expanding access to
Education for underprivileged children in Malawi. Guided by compassion and fairness,
we strive to eliminate barriers that prevent vulnerable children from attending and staying
in school. Our efforts include providing school supplies, covering tuition costs, offering
mentorship, and creating a nurturing environment where every child can thrive.

Why we exist

CARELA Foundation was established in response to the growing Educational
inequalities in Malawi. Many children are forced to drop out of school or attend without
basic supplies or financial support. We believe no child should be denied an Education
because of poverty, and we are driven by the conviction that Education is a powerful tool
for breaking the cycle of poverty.

WHAT WE DO

CARELA Foundation operates the following key programs and initiatives:
1. School kit programs
We provide essential items such as uniforms, school shoes, backpacks, and stationery
to children in need to ensure they are equipped to learn with confidence and dignity.
2. School Fees Payment Program
Through our school fees initiative, we support students who are at risk of dropping out
because they cannot afford tuition or exam fees, especially those in elementary and high
school.
3. Scholarship and Sponsorship Scheme
This program links high-potential students from vulnerable backgrounds with sponsors
who support their Education through financial aid and mentorship.
4. Community Education Support
We engage with parents, teachers, and community leaders through awareness campaigns,
parenting workshops, and youth mentoring to foster an Education-friendly environment.

OUR BENEFICIARIES

We primarily serve children and youth from low-income families, orphans, and those
living in marginalized rural and peri-urban communities across Malawi. We collaborate
with local schools, churches, traditional authorities, and community-based organizations
to identify and reach those who are most in need.

WHERE WE WORK

CARELA Foundation is currently active in Blantyre, Thyolo, and Mulanje districts, with
strategic plans to expand to other underserved regions in Malawi.

OUR IMPACT

Since our founding, CARELA Foundation has:
• Distributed school kits to hundreds of students.
• Paid tuition and exam fees for many vulnerable learners.
• Launched mentorship and outreach programs across three districts.
• Improved attendance, retention, and performance through material and emotional
support.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

“Education is the most powerful tool we can use to change the world – and at CARELA Foundation, we are committed to placing this tool in the hands of every child, regardless of their background.” As the Executive Director of CARELA Foundation, I have personally seen the difficulties many children face in accessing even the most basic Educational needs. Growing up in a society where poverty too often determines a child’s future, I have dedicated my life to breaking that cycle. My passion for helping the less privileged through Education is not just professional; it is deeply personal. At CARELA Foundation, we don’t just give handouts. We offer hope, dignity, and opportunity through well-structured programs that cover school fees, distribute learning materials, and empower communities to take control of their children’s futures. We believe every child is valuable and deserves the chance to learn, grow, and dream. I invite you—partners, donors, friends, and communities—to help us build a more equitable and educated Malawi. Together, we can transform the stories of many children and enable them to grow beyond their circumstances. Let’s invest in the future. Let’s care, let’s act, let’s educate. Brave Khangamwa Executive Director CARELA Foundation

Our Stories

Dancing Again
Dancing Again
By Chikondi’s
Chikondi, a cheerful 12-year-old, loved school and dancing. Her only pair of shoes
became painful and unwearable. She started missing school because walking hurt her
feet. Her parents couldn’t afford new shoes or basic supplies. Over time, her once joyful
spirit began to fade. CARELA Foundation visited her community and helped her. She
received new shoes, a school bag, and learning materials. Chikondi returned to school
and danced with happiness again. Her love for school and learning grew stronger.
CARELA helped her rediscover happiness and her future.

Donation Activity at Naizi Primary School

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and dedication to fostering education, Carela Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to supporting less privileged students, recently visited Naizi Primary School to donate school bags to the pupils a month after the donation of excise books. The event was a significant milestone in the foundation's ongoing efforts to bridge the educational gap and provide opportunities for young learners to thrive. The visit to Naizi Primary School was more than just a donation; it was a beacon of hope for the students who face numerous challenges in their daily pursuit of education. Many of the pupils at Naizi Primary School come from underprivileged backgrounds, where access to basic educational resources is a luxury. Recognizing this, Carela Foundation stepped in to provide school bags aiming to alleviate some of the burdens these young students face. The donation ceremony was attended by the school administration, teachers, and of course, the beaming students. Carela Foundation representatives expressed their joy in being able to support the school and emphasized the importance of education in breaking the cycle of poverty. "Every child deserves access to quality education, regardless of their background," said Mr John Kaudzu a representative for the foundation. "By providing these school bags, we hope to inspire a love for learning and empower these young minds to dream big." The school bags donated were carefully selected to meet the needs of the students. The smiles on the faces of the students as they received their bags were priceless, and the atmosphere was filled with excitement and gratitude. One of the students, who wished to remain anonymous, expressed her joy, saying, "I am so happy to receive this school bag. It will help me keep my books and other things organized. Thank you, Carela Foundation, for thinking of us." The impact of Carela Foundation's initiative goes beyond the physical act of donating school bags. It sends a powerful message to the students that they are seen, valued, and worthy of support. For many, this gesture will be a significant motivator, encouraging them to work harder and strive for better futures. Naizi Primary School's administration expressed their deepest gratitude to Carela Foundation for their generosity. "This donation will make a huge difference in the lives of our students," said the school's headteacher. "We are thankful for organizations like Carela Foundation that understand the importance of supporting education in our community." Carela Foundation's commitment to fostering education for the less privileged is unwavering. Through initiatives like the school bag donation, the organization continues to make a tangible difference in the lives of young learners. As the foundation looks to the future, it remains dedicated to its mission of providing opportunities and support to those who need it most. The story of Naizi Primary School and Carela Foundation's visit is a testament to the power of community and the impact that dedicated organizations can have on education. It serves as a reminder that together, we can create a brighter future for all children, regardless of their circumstances.
